The US Treasury Department has imposed sanctions on a Russian cryptocurrency exchange, accusing it of laundering money for Russian individuals and entities. The move is seen as part of a broader effort to crack down on the use of cryptocurrency for illicit activities.
Sanctions
The sanctions, which were announced on June 22, 2026, prohibit US individuals and companies from doing business with the exchange. The Treasury Department also accused the exchange of facilitating transactions for ransomware attackers and other malicious actors.
The exchange is estimated to have facilitated over 30% of global cryptocurrency transactions.
The US will continue to take action against those who seek to use cryptocurrency for illicit purposes, said a spokesperson for the Treasury Department.
